Hiragana have evolved from kanji to form a simplified, phonetic script. The
intermediate characters are known as hentaigana. These hentaigana
have been in continued use until the spelling reform of 1900. You
may still find these hentaigana on diplomas, official invitations, and on shop signs.

from. Many have evolved from a combination of different kanji to
form a single hiragana character.
